Joseph Frederick Waring letters and diary, 1861-1865.

This collection consists of letters and a diary. One of the letters, from Mary C.N. to Kitty, 1863, makes no reference to Joseph Waring. It mentions the death of Maum Doll and gives news of family and friends. The second letter, from S.S. (or L.L.) to Sandford, Savannah, 1861, gives news of family and mentions the burial of men from the Oglethorpe Light Infantry killed at the battle of 1st Manassas. The envelope contains a note written by Waring, "Fragment of paper carried during 4 years of war in pocketbook." The diary covers January 1, 1864 through May 9, 1865. It is a typed copy of the original in the Southern Historical Collection, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

The Oglethorpe Light Infantry was organized in Savannah on January 8, 1856. John N. Lewis was the troop's first captain, but he resigned after holding the position for only a few months. Francis S. Bartow was then elected as captain. In January, 1861, a detachment of the company under Capt. Bartow was ordered to take possession of and occupy Fort Pulaski at the mouth of the Savannah River. Joseph Frederick Waring (1832-1876) was born in Savannah, Georgia. He was the Captain of the Georgia Hussars, and during the Civil War was Colonel of the Jeff Davis Legion of Stewart's Cavalry. After the war, he commanded the Georgia Hussars. He was Forwarding Agent for the Central of Georgia Railway Co. Waring died of yellow fever in 1876.
